Pressing Flowers : A beautiful Way to Preserve Nature's Memories

Written by Hudson Flower Shop

Flowers have a unique way of marking life's most meaningful moments. Whether they're from a wedding bouquet, a birthday celebration, your own backyard garden, or a thoughtful gift from someone special, flowers often carry memories that deserve to last long after the blooms have faded.
One of the oldest and more beautiful ways to preserve those memories is by pressing flowers.

Why Press Flowers?
Flower pressing has been enjoyed for centuries as a way to capture the delicate beauty of nature. Once pressed and dried, flowers can be transformed into timeless keepsakes, home decor, greeting cards, bookmarks, framed artwork, ornaments, journals, and even better gifts for loved ones.
Every pressed flowers tells a story, making each project one-of-a-kind.

Which Flowers Press Best?
While almost any flower can be pressed, some varieties produce especially beautiful results because of their flatter blooms and thinner petals.
Great flowers for pressing include:
- Pansies
- Violets
- Cosmos
- Queen Anne's lace
- Ferns
- Daisies
- Larkspur
- Baby's Breath
- Small roses (with petals separated)
- Leaves and greenery
Thick flowers, like sunflowers or large roses, can still be pressed, but they often require extra preparation by removing petals or slicing the bloom before pressing.

 The Flower Pressing Process
Pressing flowers is surprisingly simple and requires only a little patience.
1. Pick fresh flowers that are free of moisture and blemishes
2. Arrange them between sheets of absorbent paper
3. Place the paper inside a heavy book or a flower press
4. Add weight and leave them undisturbed for two to four weeks
5. Carefully remove the dried flowers and use them in your favorite projects
The key is allowing the flowers to dry slowly while maintaining gently, even pressure.

Tips for Beautiful Results
To achieve the best results, keep these tips in mind:
- Harvest flowers in the morning after the dew has dried
- Choose blooms that are just beginning to open rather than fully mature flowers
- Avoid pressing flowers that are wet from rain or watering
- Work quickly after picking to preserve color
- Store finished pressed flowers away from direct sunlight to help prevent fading
